More Information about 2009 Workshops

Information is correct at time of viewing, we will try to minimise changes, but please be prepared to be flexible, as we will. In family life, expect the unexpected!

Please use the information below to let us know in advance your choices for activities if you are aged under 12 years old. We have tried to include information about all the activities to help you plan for the whole family. The Welcome Meeting on Sunday morning will provide an important opportunity to find out how things work at the camp, don't miss it! You will be able to register your interest in other activities and meet some of the workshop leaders, ask questions etc. Activity information will be updated daily in the Main marquee, but there will not be another large meeting of the whole camp.

Parents have been asked to volunteer at least one morning or afternoon to help with activities. Please consider what will work best for your family in advance and be prepared to commit yourself. The experience can be very rewarding and certainly makes a big difference for the children and the general smooth running and friendly feeling of the camp.

If you are booked to attend the camp, you should have received a booking form in the post with your pre-camp letter. This will enable us to ensure that each child is able to join in one or more of the workshops which can only take limitied numbers of children. If you have not received it by 20th July, please contact Judy on 01803 732 324.

One last thought!

Every year parents and children begin the camp by fretting that they must fill their week with activities from morning till night and we try to help them plan their week to ensure they have planned enough activities to satisfy them. By the end of the week the common refrain is, 'Why do you organise so many activities? We just wanted to sit around the fire and the children just seemed to find games to play with their new friends. Don't organise so many activities! Leave us space in the week when nothing is planned, so that we have time to chill out and relax!' With this in mind, we but propose the following plan: We have planned a full week of activities, but we rely on you to PLEASE LEAVE SPACE IN YOUR WEEK. You will want to have time to go shopping, to go to the beach or the river, to wander around the site and doze in the sun. Living outside takes time and children enjoy the space and time to find their own amusements.

Activities for Children

One of the features of the camp is the safe environment in which children can find or make their own entertainment.

Archery

With Toni Watson

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday 10am - 12.30pm; Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 2 - 4.30pm

When archery is taught properly it should be both safe and fun, but above all safe. These workshops are based on the Grand National Archery Society's guidelines. Each half-hour session will take you through the basics of how to shoot safely as well as make adjustments with your stance (shooting position) so that consistency, accuracy and confidence can all develop. Archery can help foster self-confidence in both children and adults. It is actually quite meditative and helps to reign in, centre and focus expansive (outwardly directed) energy.

Please note that although we have bows for smaller children the minimum height requirement to use the equipment safely is 120cm, so if your child is under that height, I'm afraid they won't be allowed to shoot this year.

Toni Watson is a GNAS qualified archery teacher and currently teaches at various schools in the Totnes area.

Tambourelli

With Bob Stephenson

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday you can play all day. Introductory sessions held at 3pm.

Introduction sessions will be run daily at 3pm, but courts will be available for use at any time of the day (weather permitting). Everyone is welcome, so come along and give it a try.

Tambourelli is a relatively new emerging sport. Based on similar sports which are nationally popular in Italy, Tambourelli is not dissimilar to Badminton yet also claims its own unique interest. Beginners are often quoted stating how easy it is to pick up and yet it provides a challenge still for competent players.

The game is played over a net, on a court roughly two thirds that of a badminton court. Tambourine like bats are used (although no music is involved in the game at all) to hit a shuttle cock over the net. Tambourelli can be played either singles or doubles and is a great game for people of all ages. Tambourelli is a good form of exercise, using the Cardio-Vascular systems and is especially beneficial for improving coordination. Visit our website: http://www.tambourelli.org .

The trip will last about 2 hours underground where you will journey through a system of tunnels and passageways. We visit Pridhamsleigh and Baker's Pit caves near Buckfastleigh. These systems offer numerous routes and are ideal for novices, while providing a variety of experience.

You will need to wear wellies, long trousers (no jeans - they are difficult to move freely in, cold and difficult to dry when wet). You must wear old clothes which you don't mind getting very wet and dirty. Don't forget a change of clothes and a towel. Lights and helmets will be supplied.
